The park service said that due to a combination of leasing terms and the historic nature of the building, the overall look and layout will remain the same. There’s definitely no shortage of patios here in the city, however, there are only a few that you would selfishly want to keep a secret. Silver Lake’s version of an adult treehouse that offers exceptional vibes as well as delightful food and cocktail options is surely one of them. According to the National Parks Service, the original Cliff House was built as a resort retreat for wealthy hunters and picnickers.

The restaurant had amazing food, and a kind of magic — a stark white form perched on a cliff at the end of the Western world, modern inside but firmly rooted in over a century of history. This last photo isn’t technically historical — it’s one I took on Velvia 50 film when I dined at the restaurant in 2018. You can see the iconic veranda above Seal Rock, and diners with white tablecloths through the window. For decades the restaurant operated as an elegant fine-dining establishment. But World War 1 and the Great Depression had a major impact, the NPS says, and in 1937 Sutro’s family sold the restaurant to other operators, who continued to run it from the 1940s to the 1970s.

As you’ve just learned, there are plenty of unique places to dine in Southern California. Of course, you can find all sorts of waterfront restaurants in SoCal… or you can dine on the water. The RMS Queen Mary is a retired passenger vessel that first set sail in 1936.

It provided dining, dancing, and entertainment, as well as an art gallery, a gem exhibit, a photo gallery, and a veranda with views of seals and sea lions on the nearby Seal Rocks. As the blog post recalled, the restaurant had nearly been demolished in the 1990s to return the area to open space, but the Park Service was inundated with postcards of protest from longtime fans, and they decided to change their plans and keep it there. The iconic Cliff House has sat sadly dormant for over two years, having shut down fully in late 2020 with its longtime operators, Dan and Mary Hountalas, blaming the National Park Service for forcing their hand.
However, there’s one incredible treehouse restaurant in Southern California that takes both of these aspects to the next level. If you are craving something different, this place will satiate your appetite. The National Park Service said in a letter obtained by the San Francisco Chronicle that it was re-evaluating “the feasibility of anyone operating” the scenic waterfront space as a restaurant in the near future, given the state of the hospitality industry. “We, too, are disappointed about this temporary suspension of services. However, we remain committed to providing an exceptional experience for residents and visitors to the Bay Area and look forward to welcoming the public back in the future,” he said. In 1883, after a few years of downturn, the Cliff House was bought by Adolph Sutro, who had made a fortune in silver by solving the problems of ventilating and draining the mines of Nevada's Comstock Lode.

The neo-classic building, which sits above Ocean Beach on the far west edge of the city, was originally opened in 1863 and has served as home to a restaurant pretty much ever since. Over the decades, it’s become a San Francisco and California landmark, appreciated in part for its sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and the Sutro Bath ruins below. According to a press release, Sutro Lands End Partners, LLC, helmed by San Francisco attorney Alexander Leff, has been awarded a 20-year lease for both the Cliff House and a cafe located a block away within the Lands End Visitors Center. Leff has, in turn, partnered with Hi Neighbor Hospitality Group to consult on a collection of venues to fill the landmark building. Infilling high-profile destinations with compelling food and beverage falls well inside Leff’s purview; he’s also involved with the rejuvenation of the Malibu Pier in Malibu. But the NPS refuses to share the name of the entity due to “reasons to do with contract privacy.” The park service expects to make more announcements about the vendor in the coming months. Anecdotal stories claim that in 1858 Samuel Brannan paid $1,500 for lumber salvaged from a ship that foundered on the rocky shore's basalt cliffs near Seal Rocks[5] and built the first Cliff House. While Brannan may have constructed a building there, no historical evidence of this building exists and its role in the origin of the Cliff House remains apocryphal.[6]The Cliff House was built by Senator John Buckley and C. C. Butler, opened in 1863 and leased to Captain Junius G. Foster.[7][8][9] It was a long trek on foot from the city and the restaurant hosted mostly horseback riders, small-game hunters or picnickers on day outings. With the opening of the privately built Point Lobos toll road a year later, the Cliff House became a Sunday destination among the carriage trade.

The Cliff House is closed now, but the National Parks Service has hinted that it hopes to find a path forward to save the restaurant. When the restaurant burned down on Christmas Day in 1884, Sutro spent $75,000 (about $2.3 million today) to reconstruct it as a grand Victorian chateau.

The new operators intend to conduct public meetings to gauge the vision for the future of the Cliff House. SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A remodeled version of San Francisco’s iconic Cliff House restaurant will reopen in 2024, according to a press release from Sutro Lands Ends Partners. The National Park Service gave a 20-year lease for it to operate. A bidding process by the service to find a willing business to take over the space to operate a restaurant began in January 2022, more than a year after the restaurant shuttered in 2020. The Cliff House lease will also include the café at the nearby Lands End visitor center, according to bidding documents. With a name that pays homage to the long-defunct Sutro Baths nearby—San Francisco Mayor Adolph Sutro founded both operations in the late 1800s—Sutro Lands End Partners is clearly aiming to reinvigorate one of the city’s unique cultural entities.
Sutro Lands Ends Partners plans to hold public meetings to discover what type of food and events the public would like to have at Cliff House. The unnamed new restaurateur is set to begin its lease at the location of the iconic Princess Diaries eatery in 2023. The Cliff House, the world-famous restaurant at the western edge of San Francisco, has been vacant since 2020, and for months, the National Park Service has kept mum on the identity of the business that would replace it. Patterson said it was “clear to me he has a good capacity” to respond to treatment. If a judge grants the doctor’s request, Patel would be placed on a two-year treatment plan instead of receiving jail time. The “suicidal” California doctor accused of driving his Tesla with his family inside off a cliff allegedly suffered from “major depressive order” and experienced a “psychotic” break during the 2023 crash.
We still can't say what they will become or what they will serve, but the wheels of the federal government and National Park Service are turning ever so slowly to get new restaurant tenants into The Cliff House and Louis' Diner spaces, both closed since 2020. The Cliff House is a neo-classical style building perched on the headland above the cliffs just north of Ocean Beach, in the Outer Richmond neighborhood of San Francisco, California. The building overlooks the site of the Sutro Baths ruins, Seal Rocks, and is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, operated by the National Park Service (NPS).
